Anyone Gardening At Home?

Great to see progress with raised beds in the village. But is anyone gardening at home?

Potatoes are the most versatile kitchen garden crop that you can grow - boil, roast, mash, bake, chip... take a look below.

Everyone has their favourite varieties and I love to try out new ones.

My choice of potato varieties for this year.

'Elizabeth' - a top performer for yield at close spacing - should be…

Registered as Transition Initiative!

I've just registered us as a 'muller' transition initiative. This doesn't mean we have bad haircuts, nor are we vanilla yoghurt with a separate portion of fruit/jam, but we are thinking over and developing our ideas as a transition initiative. At some point, when we get bigger and better, we can graduate into a fully fledged 'official' initiative! See following page on Transition Network website:…

We've been talking with Energy Projects Plus in Wallasey about submitting a joint application for funding an survey of home energy efficiency in Eastham and Bromborough. Must Do At Walled Garden

There's lots of things we must do at the garden now.

  1. Gather tons of leaves and set aside one or two compost bays to store them,
    • they will be used to make leaf mold and compost and in demonstation areas,
    • can we get the council to deliver leaves?
    • clearing up the leaves inside the Walled Garden will be a major task going foward - lets not waste them.
  2. Although slug traps have been delivered to the garden they are not being…

Free Solar Panels

Things are moving much faster on Energy Saving and there are opportunities we shouldn't miss out on. See below for another great opportuinity to save.

I've heard MP's and others talking about the 'Green' industries leading the way out of recession - or whatever you call it. Well today I had a call with another very exciting offer - free solar panels.

I blogged on the Feed-In-Tariff a week ago (see below) but let's quickly recap.

Comfrey Growing at The Walled Garden Brotherton Park - plus the latest garden developments

Hello all,

Two beds of Bocking 14 Comfrey plants are now planted at the Walled Garden in Brotherton Park. Bill from the Eastham centre helped me with shovelling and spreading the manure, perhaps not his favourite job, but he certainly does it well.

Why is Comfrey special?

First, Comfrey leaves contain large amounts of the major plant nutrient nitrogen and even larger amounts of potassium. Details are on…

Incredible Edible Hoylake

I've just met Sally and Rose from Incredible Edible in Hoylake. They were visiting the Walled Garden in Brotherton Park today. I suggested that they visit the Eastham Centre too. Their email address is incrededhoylake@gmail.com

And the advice that they passed on was: the Incredible Edible is best done by people in one area - it is more difficult to do over a wider area. So for me - I'd like to concentrate on the Walled Garden at Brotherton…

The Feed In Tariff with Solar Panels

If you want to do something now that will help you pay your way into the future then the Feed In Energy Tariff has to be high on the list. Especially as money in the bank right now is giving so little return in interest.

I was talking with someone today on how it works. So check this out.

So what is a Feed In Tariff? It works like this.

You put photovoltaic cells onto your roof, get an Electricity Inverta and

special meter…
